I learned this Scots lute tune from Rob MacKillop, with whom I studied guitar for a time. Rob’s playing of another old manuscript setting, titled If Thou Were Myne Own Thing in the Balcarres manuscript, later became the melodic source for An Thou Were My Ain Thing on Two Boats Under the Moon.
A Port is found in the Straloch lute-book, dating from 1627–29. The manuscript itself is lost, but parts of it survive through nineteenth-century extracts and transcriptions made by George Farquhar Graham.
